Mange, the New Puppy Epidemic!
Having spent the past year fighting Demodex Mange
Does this make me an expert? NOPE, this is the most insidious infestation I have ever come up against.
All these years in the boarding kennels, plus operating a rescue and service dog training center. This past year has been the worst for finding Mange in puppies and young adult dogs.
I suspect that this is directly related to over vaccination and poor diet. My reason for the statement is thus. Bree and Drea, two Doberman Pinscher puppies were donated to CrittersWork Service Dog Partners, because the breeder couldn't sell them. The entire litter had come down with Demodex Mange.
At fourteen weeks I accepted the donation of the two female Dobies into CrittersWork. I had dealt with Demodex in a puppy in 2004, and by the time the young dog was nine months old and had been spayed, the Demodex was a thing of the past.
Unfortunately I used an extremely different approach to the problem in 2004 than 2011. Trixie was able to outgrow her Demodex and it never came back.
Here is a listing of the protocols used in 2011 on the two dobies:
age 6 weeks, breeder vaccinates these puppies with a 7 way vaccine
age 8 weeks, breeder sells the puppies
age 12 weeks, breeder gets the puppies back due to Demodex. The entire litter came down with it.

Food Grade Diatomaecous Earth
3 cups Food Grade DE in 5 Gallons water, soak the dog with this for 15 minutes and let air dry.
