Heartworm and Other Parasites
Using Pyrantel Pamoate (Strongid)
Cats
Small 1/4 teaspoon
Large 1/2 teaspoon
Dosage for cats:
8 pound cat - give 0.8 ml of pyrantel pamoate
9 pound cat - give 0.9 ml of pyrantel pamoate
10 pound cat - give 1 ml of pyrantel pamoate
11 pound cat - give 1.1 ml of pyrantel pamoate
12 pound cat - give 1.2 ml of pyrantel pamoate
13 pound cat - give 1.3 ml of pyrantel pamoate
14 pound cat - give 1.4 ml of pyrantel pamoate
15 pound cat - give 1.5 ml of pyrantel pamoate
1 ml = 1 cc
1/4 of tsp = 1.2 ml
Do not use tsp or other common house utensils to give this medication, as you may overdose.
Puppies
we dose pyrantel at 1ml per 5lbs (0.5 ml per 2.5lbs) dosage does not at all have to exact.
repeat every 2-3 weeks until pups are 12-16 weeks old.

Hookworms can produce any of the following symptoms, though symptoms may only appear with heavy infections:

- failure to gain weight, or weight loss
- loss of appetite
- diarrhea
- anemia (pale gums, weakness) sometimes seen, and can be a cause of death in puppies
- bloody or tarry stools may be present
- sometimes coughing can occur due to the larval migration through the lungs (with very heavy infections)
- skin irritation, most often on the feet between the toes, due to migrating larvae
