Antibiotics and Other Treatments for Common Issues

Help yourself with processes pulled from Rescue Websites

Be careful, do your own research and make your own decisions.

Ivermectin 1% Cattle & Swine Injectible - Heartworm & other Parasite Treatment in Certain Dogs

Not for use in Collie, Mixed Collies, Border Collies, Austrailian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Old English Sheepdogs, English Sheepdogs, etc.

Used against infections and to treat ear mites, mange, and as a heartworm prevention
Rescues Heartworm prevention - use 1/10cc per each 10# of dog body weight monthly
            
Mix the dosage with Aunt Jemima Maple Syrup and the dogs will ask for more!


Mange - 
  • use 1/10cc per each 10# of dog body weight daily for 1 month
  • While treating for mange, also give 500mg Cephalexin Monohydrate 2x daily for a 60# dog
  • Bathe weekly with an anti-fungal shampoo 
  • dip with lime/sulphur at 4oz per 1 gallon of water



OR Alternatively

Mange - 
  • Use 1/10cc per 10# body weight inject subcutaneously (under the skin)  back of the neck.
  • Repeat in 7 days
  • Repeat in 7 days 

OR Alternatively

Mange - 
  • 1/10cc per !0# body weight for 3 days
  • 1/10cc per 5.5# body weight for 3 days
  • 1/10cc per 3.6# body weight for 30 - 60 days, or until the mange clears up

If the mange is really bad you may have to give this dosage once a week for ever
  • Example:  50# dog  .5cc for 3 days, .9cc for 3 days, 1.4cc for 30-60 days

Ear Mites - 
  • After cleaning ears with a warm water/detergent flush 3 or 4 times until ear is clean
  • Rinse ears with warm water and dry
  • Use any of the above Mange treatments

Amoxicillin - General Purpose

General purpose antibiotic - does NOT knock down staph infections

Dosage 
  • 10mg per # of dog
  • given every 8 - 12 hours depending on the severity of problem

Can cause incontinence.

Cephalexin Monohydrate 500mg - Bacterial Skin Infections

Treats bacterial skin infections
Urinary tract, respiratory tract, bronchitis, ear, bones and joints
Can prevent secondary infections
Suppresses the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoa

Usual Dosage:  
  • Dogs or Cats 10-15 mg/pound every 8-12 hours

Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg - Bacterial Infections

Used for bacterial infections.
Such as Lyme diesase, chlamydia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Kennel Cough.

Usual Doasage:  
  • Dogs 2-5mg/pound every 12 to 24 hours 
  • Cats 2mg/pound every 12 to 24 hours

Metronidazole 500mg - Inflammatory Bowel

Inflammatory bowel disease
Remedies certain diarrhea disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and infections in the mouth.
Treats infections caused by Giardia (intestinal parasite)
Also treats periodontal disease

Usual Dosage:  Dogs and Cats 3-23mg per pound 1-4 times per day

Mange Treatment

Lyme/Sulfur Dip for Mange

Mange 
  • 4oz per 1 gallon of water.  sponge on dog and leave to dry

Peroxide 3% & Borax (Twenty Mule Team) Dip for Mange

As a topical after the bath
  • 1 cup peroxide
  • 2 Tablespoons Borax

Mix well and apply, can also be cut with some water
Leave the dog to air dry.

Di-Methox (sulfadimethoxine) concentrated solution 12.5%
3.75 g sulfadimethoxine/fl oz

Rescue:  Treatment for Coccidia

  • Mix 5 oz of Dyne High Calorie Suppolement (or 4 ounces & 1 ounce of pedialyte/water/broth) with 
  • 4 ounces of Sulfadimethoxine 12.5% solution.
This is used to replace Albon(Rx)

Dosage:  
  • Dog/puppy 1 tsp (5cc) per 10# of body weight as an initial dose 
followed by
  • 1/2 tsp per 10# body weight daily for 10 days.
                

Mineral Oil - Ear Mites

Ear Mites - 
  • Clean ears with a bulb syringe of warm water with a little detergent.  Rinse each ear out 3-5                                                  times until clean.
  • Rinse with several syringes of warm water
  • Dry
  • rub inside of dogs ears with mineral oil and dribble a little into the ear canal
  • Repeat daily for 3 days
One week later repeat treatment

Dyne High Calorie Liquid Dietary Supplement

  • Feed "as is" for animals unable to eat solid food.
  • When diluted with water, it can be used to combat dehydration

Usual Dosage:  
  • Puppies:  1 tsp per 5# body weight daily
  • Adult Dogs:  2 Tablespoons (1oz) per 20-30# body weight three (3) times a day.

Prolate - Mites, Lice & Ticks

Sacroptic Mites, ear mites, lice & ticks
  • 1 oz per 1 gallon water
  • dip dogs being careful around eyes 
or
  • spray dogs being careful around eyes and
  • spray kennel, dog run, dog house & sleeping areas.

Repeat Process
  • 3 times a week
  • for 3 weeks



Note, when dipping a dog, saturate the coat, if standing in a tub, saturate entire dog, but use a cloth or sponge to do the head around the eyes, nose and ears.

Coccidiosis & Giardiasis protozoal infestations

Best to treat one disease right after the other

Using Metronidazole
  • Coccidiosis for 10 days 
  • Giardiasis for 5 days 


Using Fenbendazole
  • Coccidiosis for 3 days
  • Giardiasis for 3 days

Treat Coccidiosis with Sulfadimethoxine (Albon), and Giardiasis with Metronidazole (Flagyl) or Fenbendazole (Safe-Guard).

Fenbendazole (Pancure) is a much more effective drug against giardia, and it will also take care of most worms except for the flea tapeworms.

Drontol plus will take care of ALL worms.

Clavamox - requires a prescription

A bit stronger than Amoxicillin and will knock down a staph infection
Will treat respiratory infections and ear infections like Cephalexin

Dosage
  • 62.5mg for 10pound puppies
  • 125 mg for 20 pound dogs
  • 25mg for 40 pound dogs

Baytril - requires a prescription

Use only if other antibiotics have failed and dog has a serious infeciton
For skin, ear, wound, urinary, and mammary infections

Dosage:
  • 22.7mg tablet for a 20# dog every 12 hours 

or

  • two 22.7 mg tablets for a 20# Dog once a day
